Many of us have been taught that grief is bad and should be avoided at all costs. This outlook transforms a natural, healthy experience into something taboo and often results in unnecessary disconnection and isolation. The good news is that grief literacy (knowledge about grief and grief support) is a skill that can be learned. To help you get started, I shared three things to avoid when supporting someone who is grieving, along with three strategies to try instead in this Penn State Outreach blog post. You’ll also find information on WPSU’s grief literacy initiatives: Speaking Grief and Learning Grief.

Most of us weren’t taught how to navigate the big feelings that come with loss. So how are we supposed to guide the kids and teens in our lives to support a peer through loss? Here’s the good news: these are learnable skills. By normalizing the big feelings that come with loss and teaching kids how to support their peers through tough times, you can have a major impact on the young people in your life.
On May 22, I hosted the webinar “Learning Grief: Helping Kids Navigate the Big Feelings That Come with Loss.”
In this webinar, experts:
- discuss how death and non-death losses can impact kids
- explore differences between child grief and adult grief
- describe how you can coach and model healthy coping and relational skills
- share strategies for how you can guide the young people in your life to offer meaningful support to their peers
